Market Briefing

“You have power over your mind, not outside events.  Realize this, and you will find strength.”

US NFP

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 223,000 in December, and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Notable job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality, health care, construction, and social assistance. Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 9 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $32.82. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have increased by 4.6 percent.

Average hourly earnings offered a welcome moderation. USD declined as market positioning shifted to a 75% probability of a 25 bps hike in the Feb 1 policy. DXY declined 1.65% to a low of 103.87.USDINR traded a low of 82.27 after the market hours.

China Reopening

The big news over the weekend has been China re-opening to the world after 3 years of isolation as it followed a zero covid policy. Deep declines are seen in USDCNH to levels last seen in Aug 2022 (cmp 6.79, S1 6.7840, S2 6.65), USDKRW to levels last seen in June 2022 (cmp 1250, S1 1234, S2 1212).

USDINR Trade

USDINR has gapped down to a low of 82.28 but reversed off the lows. Now when trading intraday, it is important to visualize the different paths the price could take to allow for tight entry exit points and not be married to the view. Broadly price could reverse or trend in the direction of the short term trend - directional play could be a strong momentum play where the currency starts trending down from open or could bounce towards resistance and then trend lower. I will be more inclined to a reversal trade if at open I see a sharp volume spike along with price rise and the price holds for 20 odd minutes which is not the case today.

For today, risk sentiment supports USD weakness and break out below the long consolidation favors short so we look for entry points to add to the short trade. Key is to be patient and look for consolidation to have good trades.
